Shackleford Holds off Animal Kingdom to Win the 2011 Preakness Stakes!
Congratulations to Shackleford and His Connections...
Again there will be NO Triple Crown Winner!
Shackleford held off Animal Kingdom by 3/4 of a length at the wire to win Preakness 136. He ran a terrific race on the front end just behind the pace setter Flaspoint, who ended up finishing last in a field of 14!
He took over from Flashpoint at the top of the stretch then fought off the challenge of Astrology at the 1/8th pole and then dug in to hold off Animal Kingdom's late charge for the win.
Kentucky Derby favorite, Dialed In finished 4th missing out on a Special Bonus payday of $5.5 Million!
Shackleford did win a lesser Bonus of $550,000 for the win.
After acting up in loading into the starting gate and sweating a ton, he fired out of the gate like a rank horse and some how settled down to relax in 2nd behind Flashpoint. They ran a very fast opening quarter but then Shackleford was able to slow down the pace for the next 1/2 mile which left him with enough gas in the tank to hold off Animal Kingdom's fast closing charge in the stretch!
The shorter distance of the Preakness Stakes also a major difference in Shackleford's win and his loss (4th place) in the Kentucky Derby!

On the Preakness Day Under Card there were a lot of Favorites winning which did not lend to many Big exotic payoffs! There were 13 races on the card with (7) Favorites winning, (2) others coming in 2nd and (2) second favorites winning!
The average payoff for the 50 Cent Pick 3 wagers was $89.84, the 50 Cent Pick 4 was $281 and the $2 Daily Double averaged only $71.82. a
In our Preakness Stakes Picks we picked Animal Kingdom to win the race. We did not feel that Shackleford would be able to last running on the front end, especially with the much anticipated early speed pressure. We used Animal Kingdom and Mucho Mach Man on top of our exotic wagers. We did however, hit the $114 Exacta with our Bottom Wheel Exacta strategy. We also hit the LateDaily Double for $156.80 using the Derby runners with the last race winner!
Our Preakness Day Full Card Picks: did very well. In the (13) races we had (8) Winners in our Top 4 selections with (3) of them on Top.
We hit (8) Exactas with (5) in our Top 4 plus (3) others. They were R4 ($88.40), R6 ($57.40), R7 ($140.40), R8 ($91.80), R9 ($15.80), R10 ($10.40), R11 ($15.60) and R12 ($114.80). We also had (5) Trifecta and (2) Superfecta winners.
In addition we had (7) Daily Double winners in R2 ($56.60), R3 ($28.00), R9 ($27.80), R10 ($19.60), R11 ($7.60), R12 ($65.20) and R13 ($156.80)!
There were also (2) Pick 3 winners.

Lookin At Lucky Gets it Done in the Preakness Stakes!
Jockey Change, Post #7 Changes His Luck .....
Lookin At Lucky Finally Gets the Luck on His side - Derby Winner Super Saver NO factor!
The Kentucky Derby favorite's luck finally changed after having bad luck in each of his 3 previous races this year.
The Kentucky Derby winner Super Saver finished a disappointing 8th tiring badly at the top of the stretch.
Lookin At Lucky raced in mid-pack early only about 4-5 lengths behind the pacesetter First Dude who was setting quick early fractions.
Super Saver was racing just a length or 2 behind First Dude and when he hit the top of the stretch he had no gas left in the tank and Lookin At Lucky had moved out ready to challenge First Dude through the stretch for the victory.
However, First Dude was not going to give up the lead that easily as he fought back once Lucky took the lead at the 8th pole. First Dude fought hard but came up 3/4 of a length short while holding off the fast closing Jackson Bend for 2nd place. Less than a length separated the top 3 finishers Lookin At Lucky, First Dude and Jackson Bend!
Trainer Bob Baffert made a bold move by replacing Top U.S. jockey Garrett Gomez with the under rated Martin Garcia. That is a move that is not done very often in a Triple Crown race!
Baffert had not liked the way Gomez rode Lookin At Lucky in his last 2 races. The Rebel and the Santa Anita Derby. He wanted to make the change for the Kentucky Derby but the horses' owners vetoed the move.
Baffert had been wanting Gomez to get Lucky closer to the pace setters so that he would not run into traffic problems when making his move in the final turn.
Gomez however felt the horse ran better as a closer coming from further back in the field. This approach is what cost Lucky the Santa Anita Derby when on the rail in the final turn having to pickup the leaders and got into trouble when a horse in front of him had to checkup costing him the race.
Baffert wanted Lucky closer to the pace so he did not have to be on the rail and could make his move on the outside. After the race you could see how upset he was with the ride Gomez gave him.
Garcia is a young and upcoming jockey in S. California and is Baffert's backup jockey when Gomez is not available to ride. With Gomez spending the summer on the east Coast, Garcia will be getting most of Bafferts mount at Hollywood park.
This was Bob Baffert's 5th Preakness Stakes win. His first since War Emblem in 2002.
Again we will not have a horse going for the Triple Crown this year, but we will have 3 different winners in each leg of the Triple Crown series!
Calvin Borel's prediction of Super Saver winning the Triple Crown, came up short. Really short as he finished a disappointing 8th in the Preakness Stakes.
Will we ever have another Triple Crown winner??
Today's breed of thoroughbreds does not look like they have the stamina needed to race in ALL 3 races over 5 weeks yet alone win the 3 races! Heck they are having a difficult time in racing in 2 of the 3 races!
It has now been 33 years and counting since Affirmed won the Triple Crown in 1978!

In our Preakness Stakes picks we had Super Saver as our TOP Pick over Lookin At Lucky.
We felt that Lookin At Lucky used up too much energy having to come from the back of the pack and getting crushed into the rail and other horses several times and still being able to close a ton of ground to finish 6th.
In contrast Super Saver had a rather easy time in the Derby getting a clean trip and on the rail. He looked like he still had a lot of gas left in the tank after the race and would be primed to continue his winning way in the Preakness!
We did list First Dude (24-1) as our Top runner for the Place position and Jackson Bend as one of the runners to be used in the Show position. So we were right there in our selections. Just took the wrong one of the 2 favorites to win the race.
Hopefully some of you also used Lookin At Lucky on top of our other selections for the Exacta ($188.60) and the Trifecta ($2,771.00).
Our Full Card selections performed well as we had 4 Winners on Top including the $30.20 winner in Race 11.
Prices were on the LOW side as there were (6) winning favorites and (3) winning 2nd favorites on the 13 race card!
Our Full Card Selections also had (4) Trifecta: Race 3 ($307.20), Race 6 ($50.20), Race 9 ($104.80) and Race 11 (831.20). Also had the Superfecta in Race 6 ($117.10).
We also had (4) winning Daily Doubles, (1) Pick 3 and the Early Pick 4.

History Was Made!
Rachel Alexandra vs. Deby Winner Mine That Bird in the Preakness Stakes.
The race had all the anticipation that any horse racing fan would want.
For the first time EVER, the Kentucky Oaks winner was taking on the Kentucky Derby winner in the 2nd leg of the Triple CRown series.
NO Filly had won the Preakness Stakes since Nellie Morse in 1924.
(the last Filly to try was Excellent Meeting in 1999)
Mind That Bird won the Kentucky Derby at 50-1 odds going away from the field. It wasn't even close!
The question remained, was it a Fluke or was Mind That Bird that good?
For the FIRST time Everthe jockey gets off the Kentucky Derby winner to ride different horse in the Preakness Stakes! How crazy can that be?
After running over the field in the Kentucky Oaks and winning by 20 lengths, the owners of Rachel Alexandra decides to sell her to mega horse owner Jess Jackson (for an undisclosed sum)!
The new owners immediately pays a $100,00 entry feeto get her into the Preakness Stakes to take on the boys.
Well the gal proved to be the BEST horse on Preakness day as she easily won the race in a near gate-to-wire fashion.
She had NO competition on the front end and her speed prevailed. Howver, the Derby winner, Mind That Bird came on at the end with his late-rally to finish in 2nd ONLY 1 length behind the Super Filly Rachel Alexandra!
Mind That Bird proved that his Derby win at 50-1 was no fluke and that he will be a Top Contender for some time.
Winning jockey Calvin Borel said after the race, "God only knows how good she is. She's everybody's dream horse. She's the greates I've ever been on"!
Rachel Alexandra is being hyped as the BEST female since the immortal Ruffian. I'am not so sure that is true. Howver, she did something that Ruffian never did. She beat the Boys and won a Triple Crown series race!
Will we get a rematch in the Belmont Stakes between Rachel Alexandra and Mind That Bird?
If so, the 2009 Triple Crown series will have been one of the most exciting in decades.
A 50-1 Derby winner, a Filly wins the Preakness (Derby winner 2nd) and a Belmont Stakes rematch between both!
Mind That Bird is committed to run in the Belmont Stakes. Rachel Alexandra has not yet decided one way or the other. Let's hope she shows up!
NO Filly has EVER won 2 legs of the Triple Crown races. In the last 75 years, ONLY 2 have ever tried. They were Winning Colors and Genuine Risk.

In our Preakness Stakes picks we had Rachel Alexandra as our TOP Pick and a solid lock for the win.
We used Musket Man as our most likely horse to be with her at the end of the race followed by Mind That Bird and Pioneerof the Nile.
We thought that if for some reason Rachel could not hold the lead the worst she would do is finish 2nd and that Musket Man would have the best chance of finishing on top.
We won with Rachel Alexandra as our Top Pick, and had the Exacta and Trifecta. We missed the Superfecta. Our picks also had the Blackeyed Susan / Preakness Double wager.
Our Full Card selections performed well as we had 4 Winners on Top with 6 other Winners in our Top 4 selectiosn.
We had 6 Exacta winners in our Top 4 horses withe largest being $222.60, 2 of our Top Longshots finished 2nd in race 3 and 11, we had 2 Trifecta winners, 2 Daily Doubles, 1 Pick3 and the late Pick 4.

Big Brown Cruises to Win Easily!
Big Brown looked like he was just out for a morning workout as he easily put away his rivals in the Preakness Stakes. He is now undefeated in 5 career starts and became ONLY the the 4th undefeated Derby - Preakness horse and headed for the Belmont Stakes looking for a Triple Crown!
The other 3 being Smarty Jones (2004), Seattle Slew (1977) and Majestic Prince (1969). Only Seattle Slew was able to win the Belmont Stakes.
Big Brown has never been really challenged in any of his 5 career races. Again jockey Kent Desormeaux gave him a PERFECT ride pulling away from the field and then powering him down in the final yards as he had a 5 1/4 length lead.
Desormeaux actually looked behind him 2 times to see if anyone was coming after him!
No one was and so he did the smart thing and powered down Big Brown so that he did not expend all of his energy in the race which should have him ready for the 1 1/2 Mile of the Belmont Stakes.
Amazingly Desormeaux never used the whip and basically just hand rode him through the stretch to the wire! I can not remember when the last time that I saw that happen in a Triple Crown series race.
Big Brown tied as the 4th lowest payoff in Preakness history with Native Dancer in 1953. He was sent off at 1-5 odds which was a shorter price than Secretariat in 1973 who went on to win the Belmont Stakes by a record 31 lengths!

Big Brown is far superior to any of the 3-year olds he has faced in the first 2 legs of the Triple Crown, Kentucky Derby and Preakness. In total he has put away ALL 29 challengers he faced in the Derby and Preakness.
I do believe his competition has been weak this year as none of those runners have gotten close to his speed numbers. It is not that Big Brown is that fast ... it is that none of his challengers have any speed what's so ever!
None of those other horses would have been competive in any of the previous 10 years of Triple Crown races.!
Big Brown would be but probably would not be undefeated!
In our Preakness Stakes Picks, we explained that Big Brown would win easily and that the race would be for 2nd, 3rd and 4th.
We felt that the payoffs for the Trifecta and Superfect wagers would be O.K. and that you needed to play the Pick4 and Pick3 wagers using Big Brown as a single in the wagers.
The Preakness payouts gave us back $36.60 for the Exacta, $336.80 for the Trifecta and $1,192.30 for the Superfecta while the Pick4 paid $1,182.20, the Pick3 $415.80 and the Pick6 $3,863.40.
We had the Exacta and Trifecta. In our wagering strategy we gave you a couple of different ways to play the Trifecta.
A $20 Exacta play paid you $366.
In Race 11 the No.9 scratched and if you replaced him with the No. 7 (2nd favorite) horse you had the Pick3 and Pick4 winners which paid a total of $799 for a $1 wager.
The early races had a lot of scratches which made for smaller fields and lower payouts. Because of that we had a lot of favorites winning. In all there were 8 winning favorites in 13 races along with 2 2nd favorites.
Using our selections for the Pick3 and Pick4 in the Daily Double, Exacta, Trifecta and Superfecta wagers for those races we had (7) Daily Doubles for $237.80, (4) Pick3 that paid $698.20. the Early Pick4 for $318.20, (5) Exactas for $130.60, (4) Trifectas paid $463.80 and (2) Superfecta for $614.20.
What a Finish!
Curlin Comes Back to Nip Street Sense at the Wire.
Was that an exciting finish or what?
After being beat by Street Sense in the stretch, he digs in and comes back to beat him on the wire by a short neck!
Now that is a horse with a Big heart and a lot of determination to win. He can no longer be called inexperienced with the those last 2 races under his saddle.
A record crowd of 118,402 witnessed one of the most exciting finishes in a Preakness Stakes ever!
After coming into the Kentucky Derby with only 3 races in his career and none as a 2-year old, he now can be considered a very experienced runner with lots of racing foundation and a Triple Crown race win and 3rd place finish to his credit. His record is now 5-4-0-1.
What's next? The Belmont Stakes?
Street Sense ran his race and in my mind, should have won if not for a let up by his jockey! He made his typical move from 8th at the top of stretch to pass everyone including Curlin to get the lead moving down the stretch.
In the middle of the stretch Street Sense had a 2 length lead and was head to the Belmont Stakes for a run at the Triple Crown, but wait, here comes Curlin back, refusing to stop and caught the day dreaming Calvin Borel at the wire.
Give all the credit to Curlin he is one determined runner and should do well in 3 weeks at the Belmont Stakes.
Here is what jockey Borel had to say after the race, "I thought it was all over when I got by Hard Spun turning for home" and "I thought he was just going to gallop. But things happen. He just got to gawking 40 yards from home and he just got outrun".
Is that right Calvin? It was Street Sense's fault for gawking around! I think it was YOUR fault for gawking around, looking behind you and not keeping your horse focused to the wire!
As much credit as you got for your ride in the Kentucky Derby, you should get As Much credit for the loss in the Preakness Stakes!
The race was run in a super fast time of 1.53 2/5 which tied the Preakness record set by Louis Quatorze (1996) and Tank's Prospect (1985). I expected a really fast pace up front for Street Sense to close into and he got it, which set the race up for him to win. He got everything his way, except for the photo at the wire!
Unfortunately, it was the 1-2-3 finishers of the Kentucky Derby that made up the 1-2-3 finish in the Preakness Stakes which did not give us payouts worth cashing.
The Exacta returned $23.20 for a $2 wager, the $1 Trifecta paid a measley $25.00 with the $1 Superfecta brought back $340.30!
The average $2 Exacta over the past 10 years is $98.66 with the highest being $327.00, the average $1 Trifecta over those years is $361.25 with the highest being $1,956.40 and the $1 Superfecta averaged $5,843.14 with the higest being $18,887.60.
In general it was not a very good day at Pimlico for getting any value in the races as there were a lot of 1st and 2nd favorites winning most races on the card! The track at Pimlico was certainly a speed favoring one.
The early Pick 4, which we hit, only paid $93.70 for the $1 wager and the Late Pick 4 for a $1 paid $220.10. These are not the type of payouts we are looking for in a Triple Crown Series race!
In the 13 races on the Preakness card, there were (7) winning favorites with (4) 2nd favorites and (1) 3rd favorite winning. There was ONLY 1 race that a non-top 3 favorite did not win. Unbelievable!
I am a value seeking handicapper when it comes to the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes. By no means am I looking for the 3 favorites to ALL be in-the-money!
The $2 Black Eyed Susan / Preakness Stakes Double wager paid a low $34.80 when the favorite in the B.E. Susan won. How much would it have paid if Street Sense had won?
It has not been a good year for getting value in the Triple Crown series with 3 of the top 4 favorites getting 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the Kentucky Derby and then the same 3 favorites getting 1-2-3 in the Preakness Stakes.
Curlin, Street Sense and Hard Spun certainly are the 3 BEST 3-year old horses in the country.
With ONLY the Belmont Stakes remaining this year, we might finally get some good payoffs because I do not think Street Sense or Hard Spun will show up there.
Watch out for Derby horses that did not run in the Preakness to show up in the Belmont Stakes. Curlin will certainly be the favorite to win the Belmont Stakes.
Barbaro's Shattered Dreams!!
UNBELIEVABLE, as a record crowd of 118,402 racing fans at Pimlico watched Barbar's dreams for a Triple Crown disappear in a horrible accident at the start of the 131st Preakness Stakes!
As he suffered a career ending and maybe life ending injury when he sustained a condylar fracture above is right ankle and another velow the ankle.
Before the race, Barbaro had broke through the starting gate and had to be reloaded. Then the gates opened and he fired out at the start of the race only to be pulled up 150-200 yards later by jockey Edgar Prado.
At the moment, fans in the stands, at tracks around the country, at OTBs and at home watching the race on TV were stunned as they witnessed the 1-2 Preakness favorite shatter his leg and their dreams to finally get a Triple Crown Winner!
Barbaro was immediately transported off the track and onto the Bolton Center outside of Philadelphia for surgery bt Dr. Larry Bramlage and a team of 5 vets. The surgery lasted 8 hours and resulted in Barbaro having a metal plate and 27 screws placed in his leg to try and save him.
The Doctors give him a 50-50 chance to survive ...........
Bernardini Wins the 131st Preakness
The lightly raced A.P. Indy colt took a major step up in stakes competition as he easily won by 5 1/4 lengths ahead of Derby runner Sweetnorthernsaint.
With the BREAKDOWN of Barbaro, it is difficult to say how Berbardini would have fared. It is safe to say that he would have NOT won .... Barbarowould have won the race!!!
Bernardini paid $27.80, $9.40 and $5.80 for the Win, Place and Show bets. He was the 4th favorite in a 9 horse field.
2nd place finisher Sweetnorthernsaint paid $7.80 and $5.00 for the Place and Show bets. Hemingway's Key paid $8.00 for the Show wager.
Second favorite Brother Derek finished a non-threatening 4th, 11 1/4 lengths behind the winner.
The Exacta paid $171.60, the Trifecta $3,912.80 and the $1 Superfecta brought back $11,151.20.
My picks had Barbaro winning. So because he did not finish the race, we lost our Exacta, Trifecta and Superfecta wagers. Oh well, that is horse racing ....
If you got my picks you would have known that Sweetnorthernsaint had much the better chance of beating Barbaro than did the 2nd favorite Brother Derek. You also would have known that I liked Bernardini to run well and be in-the-money because he had earned a fast speed rating in the last 1/4 mile of his last race. Anytime a horse runs his last quarter mile in :25.2 or less he will run well his next time out.
In my Picks I indicated that playing the 2 Pick 4 wagers on the card were our best chance of getting a payoff with the 1-2 odds of Barbaro. Well we had the first 3 legs in the late Pick 4 and when Barbaro went down so did our Pick 4.
In the early Pick 4 wager we hit the first 3 legs and missed the 4th leg by a head and also a $1,200 payoff.
Well now with the Kentucky Derby winner out of the Belmont Stakes and Preakness winner BernardiniNOT running in the Belmont, look for this year's race to be WIDE OPEN ... it should offer us some nice wagering opportunities and a great chance to cash some very nice tickets!!

Afleet Alex Overcomes to Win Preakness!
Afleet Alex provided us with one of the most unbelievable races in 100 years!
He and his jockey Jeremy Rose showed us how athletic they both are when Scrappy T veered sharply out into the lane just as Afleet Alex was about to take over the lead at the top of the stretch.
Alex clipped heels and went down to his knees and some how the jockey held on as Alex recovered and moved boldly into the lead as he won by 4 3/4 lengths. It was a gutsy display of heart and determination by both!
Afleet Alex finished first (6-1) followed by Scrappy T (13-1), Derby winner Giacomo (6-1) and Sun King (21-1), The Exacta paid $150.60, Trifecta $872.00 and the Superfecta $20,724.60.
We had the Trifecta and also collected on the Exacta. We had Giacomo as our Win horse so we did not collect our Win & Place wager. However our wager strategy allowed us to cash the Trifecta and Exacta tickets. Not bad for the second leg of the Triple Crown sereies.

2004 Preakness Review & Winner Smarty Jones
Smarty Jones routed 9 hopelessly overmatched oppenents, finishing a whopping 11 1/2 lengths ahead of runner up Rock Hard Ten. It was the largest winning margin in the 129 runnings of the 2nd leg of the Triple Crown series!
His record is now 8 races and 8 victories! Still undefeated and headed to the Belmont Stakes to make history. He will be trying to become the 1st Triple Crown winner since Affirmed in 1978 and the 1st Undefeated Triple Crown Winner since Seattle Slew in 1977.
If he wins the Belmont Stakes, he will become racing's richest horse ever!
He looked like he won the race easy and being from Philly, I got goosebumps just watching him pull away down the stretch. It simply is unbelievable watching this horse get better with each race while his competitors are never the same after having raced against him.
Even though we did not get any big pay backs, we were right on mark with using the best of the newcomers in the Exacta and Trifecta and using Lion Heart in the 4th position. If you had purchased our picks & wagering strategy, you knew that Lion Heart would only hold on for 4th and no better and that Smarty Jones was a dead LOCK to win the race.
Remember, we also stated that the 3rd Leg of The Triple Crown would be the most difficult for Smarty Jones to win because the other connections will be plotting a strategy to pull off the upset!
The Derby horses that did not show up for the Preakness and are planning on going to the Belmont have been training and preparing to beat Smarty Jones.

2003 Preakness Review & The Winner Funny Cide!
With a stunning 9 3/4 length romp in the 128th Preakness Stakes, Funny Cide heads back to his home track in New York for an attempt to become ONLY the 12th horse in history to win a Triple Crown!!
