Arrogate Polishes Off California Chrome in a Classic!

Arrogate Beats CChrome

Arrogate, the 3-year-old late developer, defeats the older 5-year-old super horse California Chrome in the $6 Million Breeders' Cup Classic!

Jockey Mike Smith was happy letting "Chrome" go for the lead out of the gate while he raced in 3rd just 2 lengths behind, bidding his time till making his move at the top of stretch and slowly gained on the leader until he was able to catch him with only a few feet remaining to the wire!

As the 3/2 2nd Favorite in a field of 9 runners, he finished the 1 1/4 Miles in 2:00.11 and earned a 120 Beyer (California Chrome also earned a career best Beyer of 119), speed number in front of a record crowd of  72,811 cheering fans at Santa Anita Park.

With his Classic victory, trainer Bob Baffert has now won this race in three consecutive years!

The win gave jockey Mike Smith his record setting 25th Breeders' Cup victory which no other jockey will be able to break!

California Chrome's connections say that he will run in the Pegasus Championship at Gulfstream Park in January. Will we get a "Rematch" with Arrogate?

Breeders' Cup - Day 1

Beholder wins distaffBeholder prevails in the Breeders' Cup Distaff over the undefeated Songbird by a nose!

The now 3-time Breeders' Cup Champion produced a thrilling battle down the stretch with the super 3-year-old filly Songbird to prevail by a nose as third choice in the wagering!

Songbird was facing older mares for the first time in her 11 race undefeated career. the 6-year-old Beholder was making her last career start before being retired and heading to the breeding barn.

Jockey Gary Stevens gave her the perfect ride letting Songbird set the fractions on the front end while I'm a Chatterbox pressed the undefeated filly all the way to the stretch while Beholder was being rated in 3rd until making her move entering the stretch.

From the 1/4 pole to the wire Beholder and Songbird battled head-to-head, nose-to-nose in what looked like a heavyweight boxing match between Ali and Frazer!

Beholder's career record reads (26-18-6-0).

There was a record BC Friday crowd of 45,763 on hand to witness the Beholder / Songbird take down.

In the other (3) Breeders' Cup Day 1 races:

Dirt Mile, won by East Coast shipper Tamarkuz , ridden by jockey Mike Smith, came from off the pace to catch the dueling front runners Gun Runner and  odds-on favorite Dortmund the win by an easy 3 1/2 lengths at 12-1 odds.

This was trainer Kiaran McLaughlin's first ever win at Santa Anita Park.

In the Juvenile Turf  Oscar Performance was able to win pressing the front runner to the 3/4 pole where he took over the lead and kicked away to win by 1 1/4 lengths under jockey Jose Ortiz.

New Money Honey won the Juvenile Fillies Turf Division for top U.S. turf  trainer Chad Brown. She stalked outside the front runners and rallied in deep stretch to win by a short 1/2 length over longshot Coasted.

American Pharoah "Grand Slams" the Field in the Classic!

American Pharoah Wins Grand Slam

American Pharoah, the Triple Crown Champion, slams the old track record as he easily cruises to a 6 1/2 length victory in the $5 Million Breeders' Cup Classic!

The 3/5 Favorite in a shortened field of 8 runners, he set the new track record in 2:00.07  and tied for the largest margin of victory in Classic history in front of 50,155 cheering fans at Keeneland Race Course in Lexington, KY.

With his Classic victory, he becomes the first ever "Gand Slam" Champion - winning the Triple Crown and the Breeders' Cup Classic. What a way to end your racing career as he will be retired and headed to his next career, in the breeding barn.

Oh what a lucky guy!

With the SCRATCH of the Champion Mare Beholder and Smooth Roller, there were no other runners in the race that could contest him on the front end and thus the easy win by a large margin.

Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith realizing this, fired Effinex out of the gate and ran in 2nd place all the way around the track at 33-1 odds all the while knowing he was not going to catch American Pharoah His 2nd place finished gave his connections $900,000 of the purse money!

Trainer Bob Baffert has to be given a lot of the credit for preparing American Pharoah for the tough Triple Crown trail and to get him to the Classic in fine condition after losing his only race this year in the Travers! This was his 2nd Classic win in back-to-back years and now has 12 Breeders' Cup Championships.

As well to jockey Victor Espinoza for giving Pharoah perfect rides throughout the campaign. Especially after he booted off Dancing with the Stars (short guys just don't  dance well with taller girls) !

American Pharoah became the savior hose racing has been waiting for as it looked  to everyone that there would never be a Triple Crown Champion again. But he proved us all wrong!

He will most certainly be named Eclispe winner for 3-year old Male and Horse of the Year!

The question is - who will be our next Triple Crown Champion? Will we have to wait another 37 years?

Breeders' Cup - Day 1

Untapable Wins Distaff Stopchargingmaria prevails in the Breeders' Cup Distaff over Stellar Wind by a neck!

She then had to withstand a stewards' inquiry and objection after the race. She drifted out slightly  to brush up against Stellar Wind but it was ruled that there was no foul.

Stopchargingmaria had not raced since running 4th in the Personal Ensign at Saratogar on Aug. 29. Trainer Todd Pletcher said the key was not running her back after that race and give her some time off. Well it worked to perfection!

The win gave Pletcher and jockey Javier Castellano their second win of the day as they also won on Liam's Mar in the Dirt Mile. Pletcher now has won (9) Breeders' Cup Championships.

There was a record BC Friday crowd of 44,947 on hand to witness the Pletcher / Castellano victories.

Goldencents Wins 2nd Dirt MileIn the Dirt Mile, odds-on favorite Liam's Map won as  the lowest paying favorite to have ever won this race!

He did not get off to a good start as he was pinched back at the start. He then found himself racing in 4th on the inside behind the front runners.

Liam's Map is usally on the front winning in wire-to-wire fashion. But not today!

When Lea took the lead at the 3/4 pole, Liam's Map was stuck in 5th and looked like he was in trouble. Not to fear, the favorite was able to find a way out and path to get by the front runners. He caught and passed the runner up Lea and pulled away to win by 2 1/2 lengths!

The scare was over for everyone who singled Liam's Map on their Pick 4 and Pick 6 tickets!  Liam's Map paid $3.00 - $2.40 - $2.10 for the Win, Place and Show.

This was Laim's Map final race and will be retired and sent to the breeding barn!

In the other two Divisions, Catch a Glimpse won the Juvenile Fillies Turf for trainer Mark Casse. Catch a Glimpse went off at 6-1 odds as the 4th favorite in the field.

Hit It a Bomb won the Juvenile Turf Division for European trainer Adian O'Brien. He was the 3rd favorite at 7-1 odds.

The European imports had a decent day in the 2 Turf Divisions on Day 1 getting 1 win, 2 seconds and 2 thirds. The bigger Turf events are on Saturday and that is where their BEST Turf runners show up!

In the 4 Breeders' Cup Divisions on Day 1, the Favorites won 1 and ran second in 2.

Bayern Holds Off Toast of New York in the Classic!

Bayern Wins Classic Bayern survives the challenge of Toast of New York  by a neck and the track stewards in the! $5 Million Breeders' Cup Classic!

At 6-1 odds, the front running Bayern was able to take advantage of the track speed bias on Saturday to prevail in the biggest horse race in the U.S. and give trainer Bob Baffert his first Breeders' Cup Classic win!

After holding off his main competition of Toast of New York and California Chrome, he had to survive a stewards inquiry to the start of the race where he came over on the race favorite Shared Belief!

The stewards decided not to take him down because it was at the start of the race coming from the gate. Of course the connections of the undefeated Shared Belief did not agree with their decision as Shared Belief could do no better than finish 4th.

Jockey Mike Smith said that start cost him all chances of winning the race.

There has been a lot of discussion that the stewards made the wrong decision. Even though I had Toast of New York (18-1) to win the race, I do agree with their decision!

It was the year of 3-year olds against older horses as they finished 1st - 6th.

In other Breeders' Cup races on Day 2, it was a day of longshots as only (1) Favorite was able to win!

Favorites finished: (1) - Win, (2) - 2nd, (2) 4th and (4) out-of-the-money!

Winners paid: $125.40 - $13.00 - $8.20 - $16.40 - $29.80 - $14.40 - $40.20 - $62.00 and $14.20!

It was truly a great day for horse players!

It was also a very good weekend for East Coast trainer Chad Brown who won 3 of the Turf Divisions. He won the Filly & Mare Turf as well as having the runner-up horse. He also had the winners in the Turf Sprint and Juvenile Fillies Turf divisions!

It was NOT a good weekend for the European shippers as they were ONLY able to win (1) Division - the Turf with Karakonite (JPN)!

They took down the first (3) positions which paid a nice $5,010 for a $1 wager.

There was definitely a speed bias on Saturday that I feel was a result of the track being sealed in the early morning because of the rain gotten the night before and even on the morning of.

It started with the first (3) races on the undercard being won on the front end and then the first Breeders' Cup race, Juvenile Fillies, being won wire-to-wire by 62-1 Take Charge Brandi trained by D. Wayne Lukas!

The Sprint Division was also won by a horse on the front end as the top (3) finishers were racing on the front end - only the 4th place horse was able to close from the back of the pack.

Then in the Classic the winner Bayern was able to hold on going wire-to-wire. The 2nd and 3rd place runners were all racing on the front end the entire race with the 5th place runner being the only horse that could close ground from the back of the pack!

The Juvenile Division was the ONLY Dirt race where the winner came from the back of the field. Texas Red came from dead last in (11) horse field to win going away by 6 1/2 lengths!

Our Picks

In the Classic we had Toast of New York (18-1) as our TOP selection to win the $5 Million race! He only lost by a nose and almost got the win with a stewards inquiry!

Of the 12 race card Day 2 race 1 and 3 were taken off the Turf because of unexpected rain the previous night and most of our selections were scratched. In the remaining (10) races we had (4) winners in our Top 4 selections.

We hit (6) Exactas in the (10) races along with (3) Trifecta and (3) Superfectas and (1) Daily Double!

The Exacta(s) were in R2 ($8.20), R6 ($136.00), R8 ($100.60), R9 ($64.80), R10 ($245.40) and R12 ($249.90).

Our $1 Superfecta hits were in R2 ($74.80), R10 ($19,848.60) and R12 ($3,817.40).

We hit the Daily Double in R10 ($272.20),

Total Won - $26,934

Our Longshot recommendations won in R9 ($14.40) and R10 ($40.20) and came in second in R4 ($7.20), R6 ($16.40) and R12 ($18.00) for the Place payout!

Breeders' Cup - Day 1

Untapable Wins Distaff Untapable prevails in the Breeders' Cup Distaff over Don't Tell Sophia and Iotapa.

As the 8/5 favorite she was facing older horses for the first time. That proved to be no problem as she won her 4th Grade 1 race this year!

She will easily win the 3-year old Filly of the year award and depending on the outcome of the Classic on Saturday, horse of the year!

After the race jockey Rosie Napravnik announced her retirement starting Monday as she is pregnant. Rosie is one of the best jocks riding today and a horse racing fan's favorite! She will be missed.

Goldencents Wins 2nd Dirt MileIn the Dirt Mile, Goldecents won back-to-back editions and became the first favorite to win this Division as well as the first repeat winner!

He was sent off as the 3-5 favorite and won again in wire-to-wire fashion. He won by 1 1/4 lengths, holding off the late closing Tapiture, ridden by Rosie, with Pants on Fire holdin on for third.

This was Goldencents last race as he too is retiring and will be heading to the breeding barn!

In the other two Divisions, Hootenanny won the Juvenile Turf for trainer Wesley Ward. Hootenanny went off at 6-1 odds as the 3rd favorite in the field.

The second place horse, Luck of the Kitten is also trained by Ward.

Lady Eli won the Juvenile Fillies Turf Division for trainer Chad Brown. She was also the post time favorite at 5/2 odds.

The European imports did not have a good day the Turf Division on Day 1 but the bigger events are on Saturday and that is their top runners will show up!

In the 4 Breeders' Cup Divisions on Day 1, the Favorite won 3 of them  ... look for that to change on Day 2!

Our Picks

In the Distaff we had Untapable as an easy TOP selection to win the $2 Million race and become the 3-year old Filly Champion of the year! With the outcome of the Classic, she will also be in the running for Horse of the Year!

Of the 10 race card on Day 2 we had an O.K. day with our selections as we had (7) winners in our Top 4 selections with (2) of them being our Top choice.

We hit (4) Exactas in the (10) races along with (1) Trifecta and (3) Superfectas, (3) Daily Doubles and (2) Pick 3s!

Breeders' Cup Day2 Exciting Championship Races....

Mucho Macho Man Wins Classic by a Nostril!

Mucho Macho Man Wins the ClassicThe $5 Million Classic proved again to be the most exciting Breeders' Cup races as Mucho Macho Man and Gary Stevens hold off Will Take Charge and the Euro invader Declaration of War in a photo finish!

After just missing last year to Fort Larned, Mucho Macho Man guided by Stevens were able to get revenge in the Breeders' Cup Classic.

After taking the lead from Fort Larned coming out of the final turn, he started to open up some in the stretch but Declaration of War and Will Take Charge kept coming after him as Mucho Macho Man was determined not to be passed as he won by a slight nose over Will Take Charge who was a head better than Declaration of War while Fort Larned finished 4th.

The favorite Game On Dude ran up front but then tired at the top of the stretch to finish a disappointing 9th. It was his 3rd attempt in the Classic.

Day 2 was a day of repeat winners as Groupie Doll won the Filly & Mare Sprint, Mizdirection wins Turf Sprint again and our Best Bet, Wise Dan won the Mile just as he did last year.

The (9) Championship races on Day 2 resulted in (5) favorites winning along with (1) 2nd favorite winning and there were (3) favorites that ran 2nd!

The $2 Ultra Pick 6 ONLY paid $47,516 (we ALL should have cashed-in on it - but we didn't)!

The Euro shippers ran well in the Turf events with the exception of the Mile which is owned by Wise Dan and the Sprint.

50 year old jockey Gary Stevens performed the difficult task of winning both the Distaff and Classic with Beholder and Mucho Macho Man!

Jockey Mike Smith continued to add to his leading total of Breeders' Cup Championships win with (3) more making his total 20.

Congratulations to the Santa Anita grounds crew as they were finally able to eliminate the early speed track bias that was evident on Day 1 and on BOTH days last year!

It was great to see the redemption of Bob Baffert on his home track in Breeders' Cup races as he was able to win the Juvenile with New Year's Day and the Sprint with Secret Circle. Last year Baffert got shut out with ALL (9) of his starters!

The bad news for Baffert was the breakdown of Secret Compass in the Juvenile Fillies and the sending of jockey John Velazquez to the hospital.

Not only did Baffert redeem himself this year but also the West Coast trainers in general did as they were outperformed last year by the East Coast and Mid-West trainers.

In Our Picks for the 12 race card on Day 2 we had (10) winners in our Top 4 selections with (4) on top including Mucho Macho Man.

We hit (10) Exactas in the (12) races along with (3) Trifecta and (3) Superfectas as well as (5) Daily Doubles and (3) Pick 3!

Breeders' Cup Day 1 - Beholder Crushes Field in the Distaff!

Beholder Wins DistaffBeholder denies Royal Delta her 3-peat in the Distaff. Princess of Sylmar finished last!

NO favorite won a Breeders' Cup race on day 1 and ONLY 1 second favorite won a race!

The Europeans won BOTH Turf races on Day 1.

A French import, London Bridge, won the Breeders' Cup Marathon with Mike Smith aboard.

Smith won 2 Championship races increasing his lead as the winningest jockey in Breeders' Cup history.

Goldencents took advantage of the track bias going gate-to-wire in the Dirt Mile as the second favorite.

Again, there was a definite dirt track bias favoring early speed. After the same occurring last year it is just unbelievable that the groundskeeper at Santa Anita Park could not eliminate the dirt surface bias to make the track play evenly for all type of runners!

The word is that trainers were complaining today and we may see a change in the bias for Day 2 tomorrow. Lets hope!!

The average payoffs for the Breeders' Cup races on Day 1 were: Win - $13.40 Exacta - $102 Trifecta - $777 Superfecta - $934 and 50 Cent pick 3 - $489.

The Undercard races had big UPSETS resulting in average payouts of: Win - $40.77 Exacta - $434 Trifecta - $1,065 Superfecta - $9,760.

Early Pick 4 paid $29,725 with the Late Pick 4 paying $403.

The Pick 6 paid $106,839.

There is a BIG Carryover of $891,813 into Day 2's Pick 5 Pool!

In Our Picks for the 11 race card on Day 1 we struggled with all of the upsets having only (2) winners in our Top 4 selections HOWEVER our wagering strategy allowed us to cash-in on (6) Exactas!

The Exacta(s) were in R2 ($524.80), R4 ($84.60), R5 ($74.00), R7 ($46.20), R8 ($69.80) and R10 ($42.60).

Our Longshot selection in R4 won and paid a nice $18.00.

They were Groupie Doll in the Filly & Mare Sprint, Shanghai Bobby in the Juvenile and Wise Dan in the Mile.

The other post time favorites ran 2nd, 6th, 2nd, 2nd, 8th and 7th ...

The non-favorite winners paid $20.60, $32.60, $15.80, $36.60, $29.40 and $20.80 ......

The Pick 6 on Friday paid $419,245

The 50 Cent Pick 4 paid $1,757 and $5,647.

In Our Picks for the 12 race card on Day 2 we had (7) winners in our Top 4 selections with (2) on top.

We hit (8) Exactas in the (12) races along with (5) Trifecta and (3) Superfectas along with (3) Daily Doubles and (1) Pick 3!

Groupie Doll Breeders Cup Ladies Classic

Day 2 Total Won: $4,161.20

Fort Larned was impressive in his wire-to-wire win in the $5 Million Classic as the home track post-time favorite Game On Dude  did not fire and finished 7th

The Santa Anita track had a speed bias over the weekend. If you were a good front runner you were able to carry your speed to the finish. Closer had a difficult time reeling in the front runners as in most of the races the best they could do was 3rd or 4th. The exception being Capo Bastone in the Juvenile!.

The UNDEFEATED Shanghai Bobby kept his record perfect in winning the Juvenile racing 1st or 2nd around the track. Ridden by Rosie Napravnik and trained by Todd Pletcher, Shanghai Bobby is the early 2013 Kentucky Derby favorite!

Surprises on Day 2 were how well Little Mike ran in winning the Turf and how poorly Game On Dude ran in the Classic.

I was not surprised how well the 2011 Kentucky Derby winner Animal Kingdom ran in the Mile to finish 2nd at 10-1 odds behind Wise Dan. Trainer Motion has done a great job bring him back from the sidelines. Prior to the Breeders' Cup he had ONLY 1 race in 259 days!

The other big surprise over the weekend was how West coast super trainer Bob Baffert did not win a race with his 9 starters!

In the (4) Turf races the Americans won (3) with the Europeans only able to win (1).

Day 1:

There were UPSETS everywhere as ONLY 1 favorite won in the (6) Championship races!

Prices were $32.80 - $36.40 - $24.80 - $9.80 - $9.20 - $5.40.

Favorites ran 2nd, 3rd, 8th, 2nd, 3rd and 1st!

Day 2 promises even more UPSETS and bigger payouts!

The Pick 6 on Friday paid $773,865

The 50 Cent Pick 4 paid $885 and $472.

The 50 CENT Pick 5 paid $37,705!

In Our Picks for the 10 race card on Day 1 we had (5) winners in our Top 4 selections with (2) on top.

We hit (5) Exactas in the (10) races along with (1) Trifecta and (2) Superfectas including the race 3 Daily Double.!

Royal Delta Breeders Cup Ladies Classic

Royal Delta wins back-to-back Breeders' Cup Ladies Division in front running style! She made it look easy right from the start as she fired out of the gate and took the lead and never looked back.

She also gave her jockey Mike Smith has record setting 16th win in the Breeders' Cup Championship races.

Veteran jockey Aaron Gryder got his first ever win in a Breeders' Cup Championship race in the Marathon with the Argentine Calidoscopio!

In the (2) Turf races the Americans and the Europeans each won 1. There are (4) more Turf races on Saturday's Championship card. Will the Europeans prevail or will the American runners defend their home turd?

Horse Racing's Biggest Weekend Gave Us.....

Big Upsets and

Big Prices!!!

Day 2 Upsets Were:

Marathon - Afleet Again - $85.20   Juvenile Turf - Weote (IRE) - $25.20

TVG Mile - Court Vision - $131.60   Classic - Drosselmeyer - $31.60

Drosselmeyer Breeders Cup Classic The super Mare Goldikova (IRE) was not able to win her 4th Mile as Court Vision gave us the 2nd highest longshot to win a Breeders' Cup Championship race.

The Euro invaders did manage to win (2) of the turf races, but that was it. They did not run well in any of the dirt races they had runners in!

Trainer Mill Mott had a great weekend as he was able to win BOTH Classics. The Ladies Classic with Royal Delta and the $5 Million Classic with Drosselmeyer!

Mike also rode Drosselmeyer to his 2010 Belmont Stakes win which gave Bill Mott his first Triple Crown Series race winner.

It was NOT a good day for the girls as Goldikova did not repeat in the Turf, Havre de Grace did not win the Classic against the boys and jockey Chantal Sutherland could not hold off her ex Mike Smith as he and Drosselmeyer beat her and Game On Dude in the Classic!!

$2 Wagers averaged for Win $38.38, the Exacta $514, Trifecta $3,720 and the Superfecta averaged $27,511 for the 9 Breeders' Cup races on Day 2.

The Ultra Pick 6 paid $95,070 for having 5 of the 6 winners as no one had ALL 6 winners!

The Europeans won (2) races with Wrote (IRE) in the Juvenile Turf and St. Nichols Abbey (IRE) in the Turf. For the second year in a row, they did not fare as well at Churchill Downs as they did the previous 2 years at Santa Anita! (next year they will be back at Santa Anita)

Our Day 2 selections had (7) Winners in our top 4 selections with (2) on top, R2 ($6.60) and R6 ($6.60), we hit (4) Exactas R1 ($9.20), R2 ($17.00), R8 ($76.20) and R9 ($46.20) along with (4) Trifectas R1 ($32.20), R2 ($77.10), R6 ($771.00) and R9 ($111.80). We cashed in (2) Superfectas R1 ($112.50) and R2 ($411.20).

We also won (4) Daily Double wagers R2 ($17.00), R6 ($83.20), R7 ($65.40) and R9 ($165.60) along with (2) Pick 3 wagers in R7 ($315.00) and R8 ($264.30).

Day 2 Total Won: $2,574.70

Day 1 upsets were:

Filly & Mare Sprint - Misical Romance - $42.00  Filly & Mare Turf - Perfect Shirl - $57.60!

The Euro invaders struckout on Day 1 with ZERO Wins! They did manage to get (2) 2nd, (1) 3rd and (1) 4th.

There were 3 winning Favorites in the 6 Championship races!

There was rain at Churchill Downs for Day 1 of the Breeders' Cup and the main track was rated from muddy to good. The Turf course was rated good.

Muddy and Wet/Good rated dirt tracks tend to produce a fair amount of favorites winning.

The average $2 wager paid for Win ticket $21.60, Exacta paid $115, Trifecta paid $1,570 and the Superfecta averaged $16,011 or $801 for a 10 Cent ticket!!

The off-track surface did affect our selections for the day.

In our Day 1 Picks we hit (6 of 10) Exactas in Race 2 ($45.80), Race 3 ($45.40), Race 4 ($49.00), Race 5 ($28.00), Race 8 ($24.80) and Race 10 the Ladies Classic ($32.00). We had (2) Winners on top and another (3) in our top 4 selections.

Our Best Longshot won in Race 4 ($13.20) and our Best Bet Won in R5 ($2.80).

We also cashed in (1) Trifecta in R1 ($322.10) and (2) Superfectas in R2 ($323.40) and R4 ($987.50).

Day 1 Total Won: $1,858.00

Two Day Total Won: $4,432.70

The Ultra Pick 6 paid $444,571 for having ALL 6 of the winners!

Blame the Winner .... Holds Off Zenyatta ...

Zenyatta's Undefeated Record comes to an End!

Blame Beats Zenyatta Breeders Cup Classic It was an unbelievable race as Zenyatta comes from 20 lengths behind with her patented late closing run, picking off runners one after another as she turned for home and came down the stretch with her majestic stride showing the determination of an undefeated horse who just refuses to loose, but runs out of ground coming up a nose short at the wire for the first time in 20 career races!

Blame proved how important it is to have had previous success over the local strip as he had raced 4 times getting 3 wins and a 3rd. Zenyatta had never raced over the Churchill track.

Fly Down the 3rd place finisher also had experience over the track as he won in his only attempt at Churchill.

Zenyatta and Mike Smith Breeders Cup Classic Jockey Mike Smith displayed his professionalism as he took all of the blame himself for Zenyatta's lost. He said that he could have done a better job at the start of the race by not letting her get so far behind the field. He felt so bad about her lost that he cried during the press conference.

Mike had a lot of pressure on his shoulders riding an undefeated horse in her last career race and the entire racing world watching and hoping for Zenyatta to remain undefeated and retire with with a history making career of 20-0! It was not Mike's fault that she lost. It was just horse racing!!

Goldikova wins 3 peat in Breeders Cup Mile

We did get to see Breeders' Cup history being made when Goldikova (IRE) won the BC Mile for the 3rd time. She became the ONLY horse to win 3 Breeders' Cup races!

She did it by beating the best male Mile Turfer(s) the World has to offer!

This year's race might have been the best she has faced in those 3 years and she won by her largest margin in the 3 years! She is the best Mare the Europeans have racing now.

She is trained by the former jockey Freddie Head who had won the BC Turf 2-times on Misque who at the time was Europe's best female Turfer.

She got a perfect ride again just like she did last year also winning from an outside post!

Her owners have decided to keep the 5-year old in training and attempt a 4-peat next year!

In the (8) Breeders' Cup races on Saturday ONLY (2) Favorites won!

They were Uncle Mo in the Juvenile and Goldikova (IRE) in the Mile. One favorite ran 2nd (Zenyatta) and another finished 3rd (Behkabad (FR)).

This resulted in some nice average payouts for the day.

The $2 Win averaged $20.45, the Exacta $192.63, Trifecta $1,650.50 and the Superfecta averaged $8,512.84 for a $1 wager.

The Ultra Pick 6 paid a remarkable $800, 160 and that is with 2 of the 6 races being favorites that won! There were only 5 winners of the Pick 6!

The biggest UPSET of the day was Dakota Phone winning the Dirt Mile and paying $77.40.

The Europeans won (2) races with Goldikova (IRE) in the Mile and Dangerous Midge in the Turf. They did not fare as well at Churchill Downs as they did the last 2 years at Santa Anita!

Our Day 2 selections hit (5) Exactas and 9 of the 8 Breeders' Cup races. They were Race 2 ($81.60, 2-times), Race 4 ($72.00), Race 7 ($17.80, 2-times), Race 8 ($18.20) and Race 11 ($33.20).

We also won the Trifecta and Daily Double along with the Exacta in the 8th Race with our Best Bet on the card with Goldikova (IRE).

Our other Best Bet for the day was in Race 2 with Rapport who finished 2nd and paid $81.60 for the Exacta and $5.20 to place.

Day 2 Total Won: $2,228

Breeders' Cup Day 1

..... and there were lots of surprises ...... ONLY 1 Favorite Won in the 6 Championship races!

The average Win ticket paid $32.17 for a $2 ticket. The average $2 Exacta paid $188, $1 Trifecta paid $955 and the $1 Superfecta averaged $7,339 or $734 for a 10 Cent ticket!!

The Biggest upset of the day was in the Filly & Mare Turf race where the favorite Midday was seeking a repeat victory. She could not catch the 46-1 shot Shared Account as she won and paid $94.00 for a $2 Win ticket.

Her win created a gigantic Pick 6 carryover of $817,642. Look for Saturday's Ultra Pick 6 Pool to go over $5 Million!

Another shocker of the day was how the Europeans did NOT win any race including the Turf races where they almost always have the advantage. But not today. The American horses proved much the better where it counts the most. In the winners circle!!

Also the horses that have been doing best on the synthetic tracks did not do well at the Churchill strip. Horses that had run well at Churchill in the past did well today. Keep that in mind tomorrow when you are handicapping the races!

In our Day 1 Picks we hit (6) Exactas including 4 of the 6 Breeders' Cup races. They were in Race 2 ($32), Race 4 ($16), Race 6 ($76), Race 8 ($57), Race 9 ($295) and Race 10 the Ladies Classic ($54).

We nailed the Ladies Classic picking the Winner Unrivaled Bell at $17.00 and getting the Exacta at 454.89, $1 Trifecta paid $107.60 and the $1 Superfecta paid us $1,668 or $166 for a 10 Cent wager.

Our selections also hit the Superfecta in the Juvenile Fillies which paid $4,116.30 for $1 wager or $411 for a Dime wager!

Day 1 Total Won: $2,760.49

Two Day Total Won: $4,988.49

The 26th Breeders' Cup

World Championship Horse Racing

Santa Anita Park Nov. 6 - 7

The 26th Breeders' Cup is Now History!

Zenyatta Remains Undefeated in Beating the Boys!

It certainly was an exciting weekend of Championship racing with a good mix of favorites and longshots winning.

Zeynatta Wins ClassicZenyatta remaind UNDEFEATED in 14 career races as she BEAT the Boys in the Classic!

We saw the mare Zenyatta win with her powerful late move as she came from dead last and caught Gio Ponti in mid stretch to keep her record PERFECT!

She should be named horse of the year and of the DECADE. 20 years from now, we will be talking about her as being the Greatest Mare of ALL Time....

This was the 2nd consecutive year that the Breeders' Cup races were run over a synthetic surface. There were 2 repeat winners; Goldikova in the Mile and Conduit (IRE) in the Turf.

The powerful Godolphin Stable had 14 horses entered in 9 of the 14 Championship races. Of those 14 runners they only won 1 race (the Juvenile with Vale of York) as well as (4) 3rd and (2) 4th place finishers!

Of the 6 races run over the Santa Anita Turf course, (4) were won by the Europeans!

There were (7) Championship races run over the synthetic dirt surface with (3) California based winners and (2) Euro winners. The other (3) synthetic dirt races were won by U.S. based horses that had been racing over the synthetic surface at other tracks like Keenland and Turfway park!

The only exception was Tapitsfly who last raced in New York and is sired by a proven synthetic pedigree in Tapit.

Our Day 2 Breeders' Cup selections had (2) Winners on top with Pounced ($6.80) in the Juvenile Turf and Conduit ($3,80) our Best Bet in the Turf. Our Best Longshot Furthest Land ($44.60) won in the Dirt Mile.

We had (4) Exacta winners; Juvenile Turf ($62.00) (2 times), Turf Sprint ($75.20), Juvenile ($334.80) (2 times) and the Turf ($25.00). That is a total of $893.20 of winning $2 wagers!

Our selections had (2) Trifecta wagers hit with the Juvenile Turf (90.60) (2 times) and the Turf ($40.30) (2 times). we hit (2) Superfectas in the Juvenile Turf ($2,750.70) and the Turf ($67.30) for a total of $3,079.80 for $1 wagers!

We had (2) Daliy Doubles in the Juvenile ($224.60) and the Dirt Mile ($114.40) as well as (1) Pick 3 in the Classic ($360.30). That is another $699.30 in winning wagers.

Day 2 Total Won: $4,672.30

There was ONLY 1 winner in the Pick Six which paid $1,838,305.20 and that was with (3) winning favorites!!!

Day 2 of the Breeders' Cup had very good exotic payouts even with 5 favorites winning!

The 25th Breeders' Cup

World Championship Horse Racing

Santa Anita Park Oct. 24 - 25

The Euro Invaders Proved Tough to Beat ...

It certainly was an exciting weekend of Championship racing with a good mix of favorites and longshots winning.

We saw the undefeated Filly Zenyatta win with a powerful late move as she caught and passed the entire field at the top of the stretch to keep her record perfect!

Then there was the BC Classic as Curlin tried to repeat but found the Top 2 European invaders too much as he was upset and finished 4th. His loss should result in Zenatta being named 2008 horse of the year!

This was the first time the Breeders' Cup races were run over a synthetic surface. Santa Anita Park installed the Australian Pro-Ride surface this year. The first in the U.S.

The results are now in and the surface favored those horses who had previously raced well over the surface or had a history of training on synthetic dirt tracks!

It also favored horses coming from way off the pace and thus early speed horses faltered in the stretch! (the except was the Juvenile (the top 3 did have synthetic experience))

Since the Santa Anita Pro-Ride surface resembles Turf more than it does Dirt, the Europeans were able to upset Curlin in the Classic.

It looked like Curlin was going to win as he got the lead at the top of the stretch but he made his move too early and the 2 closing Europeans along with Tiago over took him for 1st, 2nd and 3rd!

Day 2 of the Breeders' Cup was very good as ONLY 1 favorite won with 2 Second Favorites also winning!

Since the Breeders' Cup will for the 1st time EVER hold the races at the same track for 2 consecutive years, we now know how to handicap the Pro-Ride surface which should lead us all to a very profitable weekend of Championship racing!

On Day 1 the 5 Championship races did not lead to any big surprises like got on Day 2, but we did get to see the BEST Filly in the World easily win the Ladies Classic (Distaff).

Zeynatta Wins ClassicZenyatta remaind UNDEFEATED in 9 career races!

She ran her normal race, taking back at the start and then lapping the field from the rear going 6 wide around them and passing the filed in stretch pulling away across the finish line!

It truely was a beautiful site to see and one that I will remember for many years to come.

We had a good Day 1 with our Breeders' Cup Picks.

In the 5 BC races we had 3 Winners on Top.

Ventura - $7.60, Maram - $24.20, Stardom Bound - $5.20 and Zenyatta - $3.00.

We had 3 Exactas - Race3 - $25.40, Race4 - $350.20, Race7  $13.40.

Two Trifectas, Race3 - $48.70, Race7 - $34.20.

One Superfecta, Race3 - $733.30.

Four Daily Doubles, Race4 - $133, Race5 - $84, Race7 - $19.40 and Race8 - $41.

One Pick3 - Race5 - $192.

3 Winners on Top out of 5 races - 3 out of 5 Exactas - 2 Trifecta - 1 Superfecta - 4 out of 5 Daily Doubles - 1 Pick3 = Total Won - $1,674.60!

Breeders' Cup 2007
World Championship Horse Racing

2007 Breeders Cup LogoThe 24th running of the two day Breeders' Cup World Championships is completed and now history.

The unfortunate part is that the weather man was not cooperative as the 2 days of races were contested over a soggy Monmouth Park! It rained from Wednesday through Saturday afternoon as the dirt track was rated sloppy and the turf course as soft for the entire 2 days of racing!

Curlin Breeders Cup ClassicThe bad weather resulted in small on track crowds. For the biggest day, Saturday, only 41,781 racing fans were on hand to witness 8 World Championship races and the crowning of many probable Eclipse Award winners! Last year at Churchill Downs there were 80,452 in attendance ...  that is almost a 50% drop off!

The bad weather and low attendance also resulted in a low handle in the wagering. The total was $111,903,685 compared to last year when the total was just under $140 Million dollars! ALL of this combined with 4 of the 8 races being won by favorites, we also got the LOWEST payoffs in many, many years!

We had a 100% increase in the number of favorites winning the Championship races. Usually there are (2) winning favorites each year. This year we had (4) with other favorites coming in 2nd (1) and 3rd (1)  ...  This is abnormal for the Breeders' Cup!

The average $2 win prices were $11.55 compared to last year when it was $24.50 and the average Exacta only paid $92 compared $300 last year. The $1 Trifecta average a measly $312 compared $3,082 in 2006 and the $1 Superfecta was even worst at $1,833 vs. last year's $38,184!

War Pass Breeders Cup JuvenileUnfortunately this is not uncommon when racing on a sloppy and soft track. The next time you are at the track when it is rated sloppy, just look to see how many favorites win and the top 3 favorites are in-the-money. It happens a LOT.

Curlin Breeders Cup ClassicThe However, the racing sure was exciting to watch. With Curlin winning the featured $5 Million Classic by widening lengths over Hard Spun while Street Sense was fading to 4th, to English Channel eaisly defeating the BEST European, Dylan Thomas, to Baffert's Midnight Lute coming from last to first to win the Sprint and given him (2) Breeders' Cup wins on the day!

Surprising on the day was that the Europeans did not win any of the races! Not even the Turf races on the soft surface. The best they did was a 2nd and a 3rd .....  on a wet and rainy day with soft turf, they should have done much better!

As far as how our Picks went on Saturday, we had the Exacta in (4) races paying $54.20, $25.20, $70.80 and $141.60 and hit (1) Trifecta for $243.00 for a $1 ticket.

We just missed both of the Pick 4s, hitting 3 of the 4 legs in each one. The Pick 4s paid $1,032.80 and $1,536.40.
